How Long Does Tofu Cat Litter Last?

How Long Does Tofu Cat Litter Last?

If you're considering switching to tofu cat litter, one of the practical questions is how long a bag will actually last.

Around one month for one cat is a common usage guide for tofu litter. But actual usage varies depending on the number of cats, litter tray size and your cleaning routine.

So why can the same bag last longer in one household than another?

How Long Does One Bag of Tofu Cat Litter Last?

As a general guide, a 2.8 kg bag of ZOOM Tofu Cat Litter is enough for one cat for approximately one month, based on regular scooping and topping up as needed.

It's a guide rather than an exact calculation. A cat using a compact litter tray may need less litter than a cat using a large tray, even when both trays are filled to the same depth.

What Affects How Long Tofu Cat Litter Lasts?

1. The Size of Your Litter Tray

Tray size is easy to overlook, but it can have a significant effect on litter usage.

A large litter tray requires more litter to reach the same depth as a smaller tray. If you're using an extra-large tray, you'll therefore need more litter for the initial fill and may use more when topping it up.

This doesn't mean you should compensate by using a shallower layer. Maintaining the correct depth helps tofu litter absorb urine and form good clumps.

2. How Deep You Fill the Tray

For ZOOM Litter, we recommend a litter depth of around 5 to 6 cm.

Too little litter can allow urine to reach the bottom of the tray before a firm clump forms, which can lead to sticking and make clean-up more difficult.

Using far more than you need, however, means you're keeping additional litter in the tray without necessarily getting any benefit from it.

Aim for the recommended depth and top up as the level drops.

3. Your Cat's Toileting Habits

No two cats use their litter tray in exactly the same way.

How frequently your cat urinates, the size of their urine clumps and even where they tend to go in the tray can affect how much litter is removed each day.

A household with multiple cats will naturally go through litter more quickly than a single-cat household.

4. How Well the Litter Clumps

Clumping performance can also affect how long your litter lasts.

A firm, compact clump lets you remove the urine-soiled litter while leaving the surrounding clean litter behind.

If clumps crumble or break apart during scooping, more soiled litter can remain in the tray and more clean litter may be removed along with it.

If you're having trouble getting firm clumps, see our guide to why tofu cat litter isn't clumping properly.

5. How You Scoop and Clean the Tray

Your cleaning routine also affects how much litter you use.

Slide the scoop underneath each clump and allow clean pellets to fall back into the tray before disposing of the soiled litter. Regularly throwing away clean litter along with the clumps can add up over time.

How often you completely empty and refill the tray also affects overall usage.

Initial Fill vs Topping Up

Filling an empty litter tray and maintaining one that's already set up aren't the same thing.

The initial fill depends heavily on the dimensions of your tray. A large tray can require a substantial amount of litter simply to establish the recommended depth.

Once the tray is set up, ongoing usage is mostly about replacing litter removed in urine clumps, carried out of the tray or lost during scooping.

That's why our Starter 2 Pack is designed to give new households enough litter to establish their tray and get a better idea of their own ongoing usage. Many households will use one bag for the initial fill and the second for ongoing top-ups.

Does Tofu Cat Litter Last Longer Than Other Cat Litter?

It can, but comparing cat litter by bag weight alone doesn't tell you how long it will actually last.

Tofu, clay, crystal, paper and wood litters have different densities and work differently when they become wet. A heavier bag doesn't necessarily mean more days of use.

The way the litter is maintained matters too.

With a strong clumping litter such as tofu, urine is contained in a clump that can be removed while the clean litter stays in the tray. You then top up what you've removed.

Some non-clumping litters work differently. Urine is absorbed into the litter rather than forming a removable clump, so soiled and clean litter can't always be separated. Depending on the litter and its usage instructions, the entire contents of the tray may need to be discarded and replaced regularly.

That can make a significant difference to how much litter you use over time.

So while cost per bag or cost per kilogram can be useful, it doesn't tell you the full story. How often the entire tray needs replacing and how much clean litter gets thrown away also contribute to the real cost of using a litter.

How Can You Make Tofu Cat Litter Last Longer?

The aim isn't to use as little litter as possible. It's to avoid wasting clean litter while keeping your cat's tray appropriately filled and clean.

To get the most from your litter:

  • Maintain the recommended litter depth
  • Scoop at least once a day
  • Give fresh urine clumps time to firm before scooping where possible
  • Scoop underneath clumps rather than cutting through them
  • Allow clean litter to fall back into the tray
  • Top up as needed rather than unnecessarily replacing clean litter
  • Keep unused tofu litter sealed and dry

How Often Should You Completely Replace Tofu Cat Litter?

There’s no fixed replacement schedule. Remove clumps and solids daily, then top up to maintain a depth of 5 to 6 cm.

When washing the tray, set aside any clean, dry litter and return it once the tray is thoroughly dry. Replace all the litter if it becomes heavily soiled.

So, How Long Should Tofu Cat Litter Last?

Around one bag per month for one cat is a useful general guide, but every household's usage will be a little different.

Tray size, litter depth, the number of cats using the tray, toileting habits and your cleaning routine all affect how quickly you go through litter.

And if you're comparing the cost of different litters, don't look at bag weight alone. Consider how the litter is used, how often the whole tray needs replacing and how much clean litter you're throwing away along with the soiled litter.

ZOOM Tofu Cat Litter uses fine 1.5 mm pellets designed for strong clumping and easy daily scooping.
